Damp is the single most common reason a Swansea sale falls apart after survey. The city's exposure to south-westerly weather off Swansea Bay, its huge stock of solid-wall Victorian terraces, and the coastal salt exposure in Mumbles, West Cross and St Thomas mean surveyors flag damp on Swansea property constantly — and lenders respond with retentions, conditions or an outright refusal.
Quick Sales UK operates nationally and buys directly for cash across England and South Wales. We do not have a physical office in Swansea.

Pre-1919 Swansea terraces were built with solid nine-inch walls and no cavity, and many were later fitted with cement render or non-breathable modern paint that traps moisture. Add a failed or absent damp-proof course, blocked airbricks under suspended timber floors, and decades of rainfall driven straight off the Bay, and elevated meter readings are almost inevitable.
When a valuer sees that, the usual outcome is a retention: the lender withholds part of the advance until a specialist damp report is obtained and remedial work is completed and certified. The buyer either has to fund the work up front on a house they do not own yet, or walk away. Most walk away.
We buy Swansea houses with rising damp, penetrating damp, condensation and mould, dry rot and wet rot, failed rendering, blown plaster and timber decay. We do not ask for a damp report, we do not require remedial work before completion, and we do not renegotiate after survey because we have already priced the condition in.
That includes properties that are currently unmortgageable and properties where a previous buyer has already pulled out following a damp and timber report.
Sometimes the numbers work: a straightforward injected DPC and re-plaster on one wall can be worth doing. But full-house damp remediation on a Swansea terrace — chemical DPC, hacking off and re-plastering, timber treatment, external repointing — often runs into five figures, takes months to dry out, and still leaves you with the same fragile chain at the end. We will tell you honestly which situation you are in.
Yes — that is one of the most common calls we get from Swansea. We buy with cash, so there is no lender, no retention and no condition to satisfy.
Tell us what you know and we will factor it in. We would far rather know up front than discover it later, because a known issue is priced into the offer and the offer then does not move.
It is most commonly reported in older solid-wall stock — St Thomas, Landore, Manselton, Townhill, Brynmill and the Uplands terraces — and in coastal property in Mumbles and West Cross where salt exposure and driving rain accelerate the problem.
It reflects the cost of putting the property right, and we show you that calculation. It does not then change between offer and completion.
